If you are still reading this review you will want to know this NAS is the BEE'S KNEES. It can do just about anything you could possibly want a NAS to do. It has a linux based OS, it hosts a web GUI for management. It can be modded to act as a mail server, media server (including twonky), it can be an FTP an SFTP, a SSH tunnel, a web server, a media center that will transcode media on the fly (watch divx without installing divx plugin), it can function as an iSCSI drive, apple time machine, itunes server, a surveillance DVR/camera viewer (just plug a usb camera in), you can put movies pictures and music on there and stream it to your smart phone, and much much more. This thing is worth every penny. If you are a computer geek you will not be disappointed with the amount features and the flexibility of this product. There is also a community where you can get plugins to make this thing do even more. Only problem I have with the QNAP is it doesn't seem to properly format the WD green drives... so performance on those is MUCH worse then I would expect. I recommend getting the WD caviar black 3 TB drive to go with this NAS.
Also I work in IT, we use QNAP's quite often with ESXi installs to house ISO's and backups; while in theory you could use it to host VM's I do not recommend it for this purpose (especially this model). You might be able to get away with this in a lab environment, but not production. This really is designed for SOHO or a geeks home use. All in all great product, but it has limitations as far as iops performance (other models will provide you with better performance).
