I've tried many of these particular type of devices. For many years, I've had a windows server storage system running in my house, as a place to store all our photos, music, videos, and backup our files. Its worked flawlessly for nearly 10 years. I've changed the hardware once in that time, and never had any outages or data loss... its been pretty much perfectly reliable (AMD based hardware, RAID type disks in RAID 5)

But in the past few years, these single chassis dedicated devices have become more mature, and I've tried to find one that I've liked better than using Windows server. I've tried about a half dozen different ones, from many manufacturers, and each one is pretty compromised in ways that make it so that I get frustrated quickly and put it on a shelf and never use it again.

The ReadyNAS NV+ V2 may be the first that I try to stick with. Our active family has learned to rely on our in home infrastructure, as its been pretty solid (with the occasional FIOS outage here and there!) Our house is wired and wireless, has ROKU on each TV. We all have Windows 7 machines (a combo of laptops and desktops), as well as Android tablets.

All the Windows machines have shares from the existing windows file server mapped, and they always (always!) work. The ReadyNAS seems to work the same, which is a breath of fresh air. All the other units I've tried required all sorts of gymnastics and technical mumbo jumbo to get the shares to work reliably and consistently, but the Netgear seems to get the job done.

The software is nice in the management console. Clear, simple to use, and rational. I'm not a hacker, just a family guy who doesn't want to spend any time supporting my demanding users (my family!), so simplicity and reliability are all I really care about. Esoteric features mean little to me.

So far, the only thing I've found that is frustrating, and very very annoying, is that I triggered a RAID rebuild in a test mode, and I cannot cancel it, which is causing response time on the management console to be very very slow (as the wimpy ARM cpu is using all its juice already).

Other than that, it looks like I can replace my gigantic Windows server, with a little unit finally.
