A few months back I posted a scathing 1 star reviews of several Drobo products. These reviews prompted several users to call me a troll but more importantly these reviews got the attention of the people over at Drobo, including the CEO and a senior technical support officer.
I had a long telephone conversion with the Drobo CEO during which I outlined and reviewed all of the problems that I had experienced with my Drobo devices over the years. Tom (the Drobo CEO) expressed deep regret over my less than perfect experiences with my Drobo products and stated his intention to make everything right, no matter what the cost or how long it might take.
Well after a few months of back and forth with the Drobo support staff which mostly consisted of my transferring my data onto several new Drobos, which had been send to me at charge, I now say that Tom has indeed fulfilled is his promise and I am once again a very happy and satisfied Drobo customer.
Here are the basic lessons I learned from this experience:
1) The Amazon product review is a very powerful tool and can go a long way towards helping to resolve issues that one may be experiencing with a defective product or service.
2) The ability of a Drobo to correctly do its job is greatly effected by the quality of the hard drives being used. At the time of my bad experiences with my Drobo drive arrays I had been using what a commonly referred to as "white label" hard drives. These are hard drives that do not come from well known hard drive manufacturers but rather are of unknown origin and sell for less than brand name hard drives. I have now replaced all these white label drives with brand name drives and the results have been great.
3) Regarding the above comment, I have told by the Drobo marketing department that they in the process of preparing a clear and simple chart which will indicate exactly which hard drives will work best with a Drobo and, more importantly, which hard drives should be avoided.
Based on my experiences with the people at Drobo I've now changed my rating to 5 star.
