I'm using my DroboB800i as a video-surveillance archival unit, and EMC Retrospect data backup. I originally used a Drobo2 via DroboShare, and then tried USB, but it was too slow for the amount of video data -- a 24-hour archival task was finishing at just over 23 hours. Overlapping caused many issues, as well as having constant data in and out. Not badmouthing the Drobo2, just that I was using it for something it's not designed to do well.
Enter the DroboB800i. I have the iSCSI directly connected to my a dual-NIC DVR server, and network iSCSI connected to use as a target for my retrospect backup server. I have had no problems since (I had a little issue setting up the two different iSCSI methods at once, but that was due to my limited knowledge of iSCSI (can't route over VLANS.. oh it's not layer 3, it's layer 2! I moved my backup server to it's own VLAN with the iSCSI and it works like a CHARM -- pulls data from my servers and points it to the SAN VLAN).
Drobo Tech Support helped me reconfigure the iSCSI connections and I haven't had to touch it since. Beautiful at what it's doing. Backup server (not original storage, the server itself is RAID5) and archival storage (not constant reading by multiple users -- 5 users at most and via the DVR software not individually connected -- I wouldn't use this for a FileServer)
Aside: To those giving various DROBO models mediocre (1-2 star) reviews complaining about speed -- a lot of it has to do with the drives themselves. If you go dirt cheap at get 5400 RPM drives, it's going to be slow. I'd recommend at least 7200 RPM drives, and get Western Digital Blue or Black drives, it's worth the extra $20-$40 over getting a Seagate or white-label, having it break and then blame the Drobo cause you're cheap)
Using mine in a professional network setting and I love it! Replaced a 1TB and a 2TB Buffalo NAS devices, and I'm at 7TB useable (2T,2T,1.5T,1.5T,1T,1T,500M,500M) and will get some 3TBs to replace the 500MBs as I need more storage. AWESOME!
