For this reduced price, the Buffalo Linkstation Live 1 Tb Network Attached Storage is widely recommended and is a regular choice amongst lots of people. With so many on offer recently, it is good to have a name you can recognise. The product is certainly that and will be a excellent purchase. I bought the 3TB version for ~$240 and I am very happy with it. I also considered the Synology DS212j but that is ~$200 without disks.
I use it for the following functions:
-To store and stream media to my Apple TV (2nd gen with xbmc)
-As a time machine backup disk for my Mac
-As a torrent downloader (client comes installed, is fast and easy to use)
I was initially using it with a Belkin N750 Router but was having some problems - my Mac's console revealed that the smb connection would drop and reconnect after every minute and this led to choppy/unreliable video playback. However, I suspected that this was the router's fault since this also happened with another USB drive I had plugged straight to the router. I then switched to an Airport Extreme (5th gen) and have been using this NAS without any problems.
With my Macbook, over gigabit ethernet I get file write speeds ~50MBps (reads are faster) and over 5ghz wireless-N I get ~15MBps with Airport Extreme (5th gen), ~11MBps with Belkin N750, and ~9MBps with Cisco Linksys E2500. Hence the speed over gigabit ethernet is faster than what one can expect with a USB 2.0 connection. The speed over wireless, though dependent on the router, is also sufficient for media streaming/backups etc.
The only drawbacks I can think of are - the web-based interface is a little slow to respond and the drive can be audible under heavy activity in a silent room.
Overall I am very happy with the purchase - the NAS is fast, reliable (so far) and versatile.
Edit: It seems another reviewer has problems streaming certain media formats to his device (PS3). This is likely a limitation of the PS3 - I have experimented with three devices - an Apple TV 2nd gen running xbmc, a Boxee Box, and a Western Digital WD TV Live - all three were able to play all my files stored on the NAS (including .flv and .mkv video files), with only the Apple TV struggling with highest bitrate 1080p .mkv files. Hence, it is most likely not a compatibility/bandwidth issue of the NAS, but a limitation of the playback device.
