My goal was to purchase a 4 drive USB enclosure that supported the latest 2TB drives. I have a bunch of these drives so I can test right away.

My first attempt was the Sans Digital TowerRAID TR4U-B 4 Bay SATA to USB 2.0 JBOD/Spanning Enclosure (Black):

Based on the reviews you would think this would work well, and also based on the description "Supports the latest 2TB Hard Drive. Up to 8TB in storage capacity. (*Max. 2TB volume when in Spanning mode)." You would think it's the best choice. Think again. I owned 2 of these, one from newegg and one from Amazon. I got one from newegg tried it with a few 2TB drives, and it does NOT recognize them. I thought that maybe the newegg model was older so I contacted Sans Digital for support, they replied promptly asking me for the makes/serials of the drives that I used. I sent them high resolution pictures of the drives that don't work. No reply. I ordered another one from Amazon, thinking that it must support 2TB drives, because it says so in the description. Wrong again. Returning as we speak.

So I popped the Sans Digital from newegg open to find the chipset that it's using. It was an IDE chipset and had the markings "D8927GC-002" on it. Strange, because this is a SATA box. I tracked the company that makes these to a Japanese company named Workbit. The chip is also called the USAT-3.

Then, the Sans Digital uses an IDE to SATA bridge made by CFI. CFI no longer exists ([..]) and so I couldn't find any specs on that.

This was not the storage box I was looking for, it had no chance of supporting the 2TB drives that I wanted. Right now I'm trying to return both of these.

So I did some research on this StarTech model and their website clearly states what chipset they use. A sure sign that these guys are not hiding anything.

I am very impressed with this model.

Advantages over Sans Digital:

* Properly supports 2TB drives.
* Modern chipset.
* Smaller form factor. Yes, this houses 4 drives but is significantly smaller that the Sans Digital model.
* Better design. No comparison here from the finish on the outside to all the details inside, this is a FAR superior unit.
* Drives have attachable handles for easy removal. These also provide padding and ensure a secure connection then the spring loaded front bracket is closed.
* Has a metal bracket that ensures the drives are well secured in the unit, screw-less design here. The drive handles are however attached once using 2 screws, but once attached, drive can be swapped in and out very easily. Brilliant.
* Front spring push-locked door. This is actually removable, if you need quick access to swap the drives often. Again, brilliant.
* Detailed indicator lights on the front.
* Can connect both esata and USB at the same time to 2 different computers. Swap between which computer will see the device with a push button on the front (I did not try this).
* Silent fan, controlled by a thermistor (temperature sensor). Also can be put into manual mode.
* Each drive has an activity indicator light. It's integrated in a very slick way with the front bezel.

Cons:

* There MUST be a drive in the TOP slot or else the USB will not connect. This is probably what one of the reviewers was experiencing.
* Drive handles may be a problem if swapping drives often between different make enclosures. This is not the case for me, and you can actually not use them if you want to.

Just to reiterate the above point, if there is no drive in the first TOP slot, the unit will not power on properly and will not be recognized by your computer.

This seems like a great unit, they should be selling more of these.

I bought this 500GB version CiragoTV Platinum player for about $120 nearly a year ago, which was a great deal when the product was released. The drive died in about a month, so I bought a 2TB drive for $70 and stuck it into the Cirago myself. The HDD transfer was pretty simple and quick. The player has been very solid ever since, not crashing a single time. I'm not going to deduct a star from the Cirago because the drive, made by WD, died. The Cirago is solid, but now I see why the earlier product was so heavily discounted. The 500GB drives were garbage. Regardless, the $190 I paid for the unit and the 2TB drive was still cheaper than the 2TB Ciragos, so I was happy.

The Cirago, unlike two of my three other players (Viewsonic VMP71 and Micca SlimHD) recognizes the chapters in MKV files, skips through pages of files with the skip buttons on the remote, and jumps from A to Z when scrolling/jumping backwards. My third player, Brite-View BV-5005HD, does the aforementioned operations as well, but it lacks the built-in drive slot. The Brite-View was my favorite player until I got the Cirago. Some users complain about the Cirago's remote control, but other than the small size of some often used buttons, like the play/pause button, I do like the remote. I found that the unit has a wide angle of receiving signal from the remote, unlike another reviewer has stated.

I did not try this with my Cirago, but my Brite-View player would not properly recognize my external 3TB drive. I partitioned the external drive into 2TB and 1TB partitions, and the Brite-View now has no problem with my 3TB drive. Did anyone try partitioning their larger-than-2TB hard drive with the Cirago? I guess I should give that a try myself once I get the two units under the same roof again.

My only complaint about the Cirago is its UI appearance. It is difficult to distinguish which option on the main menu is highlighted when the user in not moving the selector around. The programmers should have made the selected field stand out significantly more from the rest of the choices. And second, when displaying files, the Cirago only shows six files at a time. There is plenty more realty on the screen that could be utilized, but is instead being wasted by empty spaces and large gaps between the files. What a shame. My Brite-View displays 9 or 10 files at a time.

Overall I'm extremely happy with this media player. It's my favorite out of the four models I own. But it is not perfect, and I'm ready to grab one of the new generation players that came out late last year, the ones that have the frontal display and picture cataloging of the movies by Pivos, HiMedia, and Micca.

I purchased this device to place my 2x 500GB drives in an external enclosure with RAID-1 (mirrored) configuration.

When I received the package, it felt heavy - it felt like there was a very sturdy hard drive enclosure within the box that was made of a lot of very sturdy metal. The box itself was well wrapped, with clean printed labels and text. Upon opening the box, the contents within were well-wrapped in plastic bags and cardboard supports.

Installing the drives themselves were a piece of cake. The screws for the enclosure are thick and sturdy. The two 3.5" hard drives that I owned fit in the enclosure perfectly. Once I configured the DIP switches** (more on that later), the enclosure was up and running. I initially tested it with the USB 2.0 connection, and it recognized correctly as a single mirrored volume. I then moved it to an eSATA connection (using the eSATA expansion panel provided in the package). The unit performs flawlessly, with transfer rates consistant with the native speed of the hard drives (50Mbps - 60Mbps read rates).

Cons: Documentation on configuring RAID level is incomplete.

** - The documentation correctly shows the DIP switch configurations for how to configure for different RAID levels. However, it does NOT tell you that the proper way to set a new RAID level configuration is to 1) configure the DIP switches (without drives installed) 2) Power the unit up. 3) Hold down the Reset button for several seconds. 4) Release the Reset button. 5) Power the unit down. 6) Install the drives.
